Ryan drives the public conversation around alternative proteins in Asia. As lead author of GFI APAC’s monthly e-newsletter and a regular contributor to global news outlets, he spotlights recent breakthroughs in the science, policy, and business of ‘future foods,’ and illuminates the road ahead. His writing has been published in top newspapers and digital media publications, including Nature, The Straits Times, South China Morning Post, The Nikkei, CNA, Lianhe Zaobao, Trends in Cell Biology, The Business Times, The Bangkok Post, and Nikkei Asia.

He is based in Los Angeles.

Prior to joining GFI, Ryan was an international expert on sustainable food systems at the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), based in Hanoi, Vietnam. He also spent more than a decade working in global animal protection. Outside of his food advocacy, Ryan is an avid traveler who has visited more than 50 countries. He is also a freelance writer whose work has been published in USA Today, Wired, and other top newspapers. His first book, a nonfiction travelogue titled The Hidden Nations of Animals, will be published in 2026.
