Dean Powell
SENIOR SCITECH ANALYST
As GFI APAC’s Senior Scitech Analyst, Dean Powell drives scientific and technical initiatives to advance regulatory and policy settings for cultivated meat and fermentation-enabled products. Dean works with governments, intergovernmental fora, scientists, corporations and strategic partners to advance regulatory harmonisation, public R&D, trade, and innovation. He has contributed to cultivated meat regulatory developments at the Codex Alimentarius Commission and International Organization for Standardization. He also represents GFI at scientific and industry conferences and events to contribute technical insights.
He is based in Sydney, Australia.
Prior to joining GFI, Dean held several roles across the Australian federal government both as a scientific assessor for food safety regulations and as an international policy analyst focusing on the Asia Pacific region. He holds a Ph.D. in molecular and cellular biology with a focus on poultry muscle development and a bachelor’s in Animal and Veterinary Bioscience, both from the University of Sydney.
Dean has authored food safety and regulatory focused articles in highly regarded journals such as comprehensive reviews in Food Science and Food Safety and Trends in Food Science & Technology. He has also presented his work at the Codex Alimentarius.
